Multistep problems with money

Introduction:

Be aware that students working at a C level are only expected to work out whether they have ‘enough’ money rather than calculate the change. A level students are expected to work out how to calculate change. Complete Blast activities B1-B4 before beginning this journal problem .

Misconceptions to watch out for:

Students who do not differentiate between dollars and cents.
Students who do not regroup 100c as the same as $1.
Students who cannot skip count in multiples of 10 and 5, or who cannot count on (e.g. starting with 50c then adding a 10c can’t work out to say “50, 60” so says “50, 10”.

You will need: Having photocopies of money or play money would be useful for students.

Leading questions:

How could you work out if you have enough money?
What amount of money is close to $24.75?
Start with a $20 note. “Do I have enough money? How did you know? What else should I pick up?”
Pick up the dollar coin and the $20 note. “Do I have enough money? How did you know? What else should I pick up?”
