WA: Intervention strategies for misconceptions – 14 Nov 2024, Perth

It can be difficult to know what to do when students fall behind in mathematics.

This one-day workshop shows teachers how to find and fix misconceptions in primary-school place value for good. To check out the peer-reviewed paper where this series was used, click here.

The workshop provides real answers to some of the most challenging parts of teaching, backed up by improvement data from both PATM and NAPLAN, and through a live demonstration lesson with real students.

Participants deconstruct student understanding in Quantity, Partitioning, Relative Size and Proportional Reasoning, focusing on identifying underlying misconceptions and planning next steps to address them. Place value concepts, from understanding single-digit numbers through to decimal numbers, will be covered in depth. Participants will take away three manuals containing diagnostics and lessons designed to fix misconceptions in key number concepts of their choice.

Please note: while this course is aimed at primary-school concepts, high school teachers with struggling students will find it enormously beneficial – check out the graph for results!

We recommend the following selection:

• P-3: Addition and Subtraction, Place Value, Multiplication and Division
• 4-6: Place Value, Fractions, Decimals and Percent (note: you probably want Multiplication and Division as well)
• 7-9: Realistically, you probably want all of them (or consider adding a website subscription and we will include access to a six-month catch-up program for year 7 students for free)
